2023 BMW X7 Debuts With An Updated Face, New iDrive 8 Technology

The BMW X7 – the biggest, boldest and best-selling SUV in Bavaria – will be renewed after five years on the market. For 2023, BMW designers revamped the X7, giving it a sportier look at the front, slight updates at the rear, extra power to the base model, and an updated cabin with the latest and greatest technology inside.

Bold New Look

Speaking of faces first, BMW is splitting its traditional headlights in half for 2023. This dual lighting setup will be a new staple for the full-size BMW model, eventually making its way to the i7 and 7 Series electric sedans, as well as the XM hybrid crossover sedan. .

On the X7, the LED lights run at the top near the hood line, while the actual headlights are at the bottom of the bumper. The purpose of this display, says BMW, is to emphasize the upright position of the X7. Beyond that, the lower fascia on the xDrive40i model features a shiny new silver trim that protrudes from the base of the bumper, while the updated kidney grille sports dark slats around a lighter chrome. And what’s new for 2023: Cascade Lighting elements within the grille itself, a la Rolls-Royce.

The sportier X7 M60i does not use chrome for the glossy black treatment. The kidney grille and bottom vents sport a monotone black finish, while the headlight fixtures have a dark shimmer that gives them a more aggressive look. And as expected, the M badge is on the left side of the grille.

To keep up with this bold new style, BMW added 14 colors to the palette. Sparkling Copper Gray metallic – pictured here on the xDrive40i model – is one of the new colours, joining M Marina Bay Blue metallic as pictured on the M60i, with other BMW Individual finishes such as Ametrin, Dravit Grey, Tanzanite Blue II and Frozen Pure. Gray is also available.

Buyers can also opt for their X7 with the BMW M 50 Years badge, which looks like this. And for the first time on a BMW product, 23-inch alloy wheels are available. The base model xDrive40i uses standard 21-inch alloy wheels, the M60i uses 22-inch alloy wheels, and 23-inch BMW Individual wheels are also available on the high-end model.

More Basic Powers

The 2023 X7 still offers the same two engine displacements as last year: the base 3.0-liter inline-six and the optional twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. But now, both engines get the help of a 48-volt mild hybrid. The base inline-six has been significantly upgraded with a 40-horsepower boost, and an additional 52 pound-feet of torque. That gives a total output of 375 hp and 383 lb-ft. With that said, the X7 xDrive40i can now hit 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds.

The twin-turbo V8 unit still has the same powerful 523 hp and 553 lb-ft as last year, enough to propel the M60i model to 60 in 4.5 seconds. And at the top of the range, the Alpina XB7, with a tweaked twin-turbo V8, makes 630 hp and 590 lb-ft, launching it to 60 in 4.0 seconds and at a limited top speed of 180 miles per hour. Each version of the X7 for 2023 also features a new eight-speed automatic transmission with launch control function.

Now standard on the X7 M60i model is Integral Active Steering and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional on the xDrive40i model as part of the Dynamic Handling package, the Integral Active Steering is a variable ratio rack that helps increase responsiveness at higher speeds and allows for better maneuverability in difficult situations.

Inside the new X7 is BMW’s latest iDrive 8 infotainment system. Comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen, both hidden behind a beautifully curved display, the iDrive 8 is here for the first time as a gas-powered BMW. So far, the iDrive 8 is only available on the electric iX and i4.

The interface of iDrive 8 is a completely new system compared to the previous 7 releases, with a sleeker interface, slimmer home screen, and additional features. Things like voice and gesture controls, meanwhile, carry over from the previous model.

Multi-contour seats are now standard on the X7, with heating function standard for the driver and front passenger. Previously, both were options. Massage and ventilation functions can both be added as options, and BMW’s vegan Sensafin faux leather is standard in the xDrive40i model. The M60i gets the standard Extended Merino skin, which is also available as an option on the base model.

The 2023 X7 xDrive40i starts at $78,845 with a destination cost of $995 included, which is a slight difference from last year’s around $2,000. Meanwhile, the more powerful X7 M60i costs $104,095 for the new year.
