Mercedes-AMG CLE Convertible Spied Up Close Near The Nurburgring

With the development of spring weather in Germany, Mercedes-Benz is increasing activity on the Nürburgring. Among the sea of ​​prototypes camouflaged with eddies, there is something we haven’t seen very often. Rumor has it that the C-Class and E-Class coupes and convertibles will be combined into the new CLE-Class, and this appears to be a hot AMG version, presumably called the CLE 63.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about this new lineup. Looking at the state of the prototype in these photos, it’s likely that Mercedes still doesn’t know much either. Trapped on a public road near the AMG testing center at the Nürburgring, this prototype is far from being production ready. The janky exhaust tip pokes out from under the rear fascia from a rectangular cut that looks like it’s actually been cut. The placeholder taillights are clearly visible, and a wire hangs from under the trunk lid. Actually, taking a closer look, it could be the rope used to open the trunk. Yes, this is definitely a work in progress prototype.

Moving ahead, it’s hard to say what aspects are production-ready as it’s all well hidden by the faux panels. At the very least, the headlights appear to have in-house sensors, and we see what could be the front camera in the corners of the front fascia. Ribbon covers the A-pillars, thick covers hide the fabric roof, and more faux panels accentuate the body lines along the sides.

The item that couldn’t be hidden was the tire, and that was seriously wide. That goes for the front but it’s the back that catches our eye. Zoomed in, they look like 20-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 5s in 285/30 guise. That’s the reason we believe this is an AMG model, and with meat like this on the back, it’s more than likely the best version. As such, the CLE 63 is a reasonable conclusion, and if it borrowed the powertrain from the current C63, it could pack in well over 500 horsepower.

Will we see a debut in 2022? Things are still early in the program, at least from a real world testing point of view. A better theory would be Mercedes debuting the CLE-Class next year as a 2024 model, but this is one example where we would love to be wrong.
