GMC Hummer EV Buyers Are Big Spenders That Don’t Mind Paying For More

The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 doesn’t come cheap. It costs $112,595, including destination fees, and GMC packs it with every available factory option. However, that doesn’t stop potential buyers from adding a few thousand more to the price tag. GMC told Automotive News that customers add $2,000 to $4,000 on top of the six-figure starting price of the Edition 1, and they’re spending it on a wide variety of accessories.

GMC offers nearly 200 Hummer-only aftermarket items, but customers are interested in the exterior lighting package and the retractable bed covers. GMC is offering an Edition 1 pickup with a soft tonneau cover, but that hasn’t stopped buyers from upgrading. The lighting package includes off-road auxiliary lights, tailgate ladder lights, and more. The tailgate audio system and roof panel storage kit are other upgrades that customers choose.

Last month, Duncan Aldred, global vice president of Buick and GMC, told the publication that Hummer EV buyers outnumbered Sierra and Yukon buyers twice as much for accessories. That trend has persisted with 80 percent of reservation holders so far ordering Edition 1 specs even though official Edition 1 reservations are long gone. GMC sells every Edition 1 reservation within one hour of the order book opening at the end of 2020.

The company has 66,000 orders for the Hummer, which will get the new variant over the next two years. GMC will offer the EV truck in different configurations with varying outputs, with the cheapest trim arriving as early as 2024. Prices will start at $80,000, and won’t be equipped with the features of the Edition 1.

Edition 1 has all the goodies one could want in a Hummer, including the SuperCruise, Infinity Roof and adaptive dampers. The car also gets a Watts to Freedom driving mode, four-wheel steering with CrabWalk, and an extreme road package that adds extra protection under the underbody and 35-inch tires. The 1st Edition also packs a powerful three-motor electric powertrain that produces 1,000 horsepower (745 kilowatts) and 1,200 pound-feet (1,626 Newton-meters) of torque, offering a range of 329 miles while delivering a weight of just over 9,000 pounds.
