Ford Mondeo Production For Europe Ends After Nearly 30 Years

The writing has been on the wall since March 2021 when Ford announced plans to end production of the Mondeo. The final nail in the midsize car’s coffin was put on April 4 when the last car rolled off the assembly line at the factory in Valencia. A product engineer takes for LinkedIn to share an image of a mid-sized car swan song, a gray wagon with a banner indicating that it is the last of its kind.

The “CD391” represents the model’s code name, which was shared with the dysfunctional Fusion when Ford developed the car as its first global model. Its North American counterpart said goodbye to the car world nearly two years ago, but even though both cars died, the model has spawned a new generation in China.

Indeed, the Mondeo Mk5 was unveiled earlier in the year in the most populous country in the world where it will be produced. Since its premiere, Blue Oval has confirmed there are no plans to sell the revamped model anywhere else. The same can be said about the Evos in the same style, a wagonized SUV that we wouldn’t mind seeing outside of China. The prototype has caught testing in various parts around the world, so maybe Ford is up to something.

As for Mondeo, it’s dead in Europe because people generally prefer something else. Ford didn’t specifically mention the SUV, only saying the model is now gone due to “changing customer preferences.” A company spokesperson was contacted by car went on to say the Dearborn marque is “expanding our range of passenger vehicles in Europe to meet changing customer needs as we move to an all-electric future.”

To some extent, the Mondeo is a victim of the SUV craze. For the same reason, the Opel Insignia is reportedly moving away from the traditional sedan and formula wagon to a high-riding offering. Citroën has gone down this path with the wacky C5 X while Volkswagen has ended production of the Passat Sedan.

Wolfsburg is cooking up a new generation of its midsize model, but some say it will be a wagon-only affair. If you still want a midsize car from a mainstream automaker, Skoda has confirmed the new Superb will once again come in sedan/liftback and wagon variants. There’s also a gorgeous Peugeot 508 available in Europe where Toyota sells the Camry.

As a final note, Ford will also be bidding farewell to the EcoSport in Europe as production of the aging subcompact crossover in Romania is due to end later in 2022.
