Nissan has been very quiet following the world premiere of the new Z in August, but more content is about to intertwine as we approach the launch of the sports car market. Case in point, Byron Glover Jr. alias Drive 615 on YouTube, invited to ride the rifle in a prototype successor to the 370Z. Driven by Paul Hawson, Nissan’s product planner for sports cars, the much-anticipated coupe is part of a fleet headed for the Tennessee auto show.
Two 2023 Zs appear on camera, a Boulder Gray with a manual gearbox and a gorgeous Passion Red equipped with an automatic. The YouTuber hopped into the final passenger seat, a test vehicle carrying a factory license plate because the production-ready car hasn’t landed in the United States yet. Based on the Performance trim level, the aluminum paddle shifters are derived from the mighty GT-R.

The twin-turbo V6 engine sounds really good and works here with the optional nine-speed automatic. Just like the six-speed manual, which would be our pick, it has launch control and rev-matching technology. You know and also I know why the speedometer is blurry sometimes. Nissan representatives were eager to launch the Z several times, even though it was only a prototype.
As expected, the Z is much more civilized than the GT-R and stays cool when you’re not pushing it. Going for an eight-speed automatic makes it more of a grand tourer, but if recent history has taught us anything, it’s that people will want a stick shift. We still don’t have pricing details, but the latest intel suggests the car will go on sale in the US this June.
The hype surrounding this car is still there, although the Toyota GR Corolla has been attracting attention lately. With rumors of a Supra manual finally brewing, corroborated by the new 86 and BRZ circulating, the Z comes at a time when fans are spoiled for choice. Let’s not forget the next BMW M2 will be revealed later this year, so depending on your budget, there are some great options for fun cars.
