If you want an off-road Kia SUV, you’ll have to choose between the Sorento and the Telluride in the US. Both differ in size but sadly, both come with a unibody construction, which is not very ideal for tough situations. For the more traditional crowd, the body-on-frame SUV is still the weapon of choice.
But did you know that Kia once sold a body-on-frame SUV in the US under the name of the Borrego? It was pulled from the market in 2010 due to poor sales, never to return. In Korea, however, it was initiated as the Kia Mohave 2023.
Now in its second facelift based on the Masterpiece Concept from 2019, the Kia Mohave is still using the same old platform as the Borrego, albeit heavily updated for modern times. Currently on sale in South Korea, and this video is from Asian Gasoline gives us an idea of what the US has been missing in a supposedly tough SUV.
The Kia Mohave is slightly larger than the Sorento but smaller than the Telluride, so cabin space is limited but adequate as described by the 6’2″ video presenter above. Ride height is also higher, which is to be expected since riding on a stair frame chassis.
Another feature we missed was the Mohave V6 turbodiesel that produces 253 horsepower (189 kilowatts) and 413 pound-feet (560 Newton-meters) of torque. This oil burner is equipped with a new device to reduce emissions due to regulations in Korea. Additionally, a rear-biased all-wheel drive system is also available as an option in Korea, paired with a terrain mode. This makes this SUV ready for any terrain, something off-roaders will surely appreciate.
For the price, the Kia Mohave 2023 starts at $41,100 (at current exchange rates) and reaches almost $49,000 for the top-of-the-range Mohave Gravity.
