Next-Gen Mercedes-AMG GT 53 and 63 Go For More Shakedown Runs

Late last year, Mercedes-Benz revived the SL Roadster with the AMG brand. Now dubbed Mercedes-AMG SL, it effectively replaces the AMG GT Roadster produced from 2015 to 2021. That said, the GT name lives on for the hardtop version.

Spy shots of the second generation Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe came out sometime earlier this year. The first new GT Coupe to be seen was the “entry-level” 53 version, followed by the 63 model a few days after its initial sighting. But in a more recent spy shot, the GT is getting closer and closer to a shakedown around the Nurburgring.

Recent photos show the GT 53 exiting the Nurburgring truck, perhaps getting ready to hit the demanding track. This set also includes a GT 63 that performs evasive maneuvers to evade spy photographers.

Like the previous image, the latest one strongly suggests an evolutionary redesign. The coupe will likely have hints of the SL Roadster and may have some elements of the Project One hypercar. There’s new stuff to see here, though. The yellow GT 53 appears to be sporting a black version of the production wheels. Also, there’s a glimpse of the dashboard, revealing the round, retro-looking AC vents.

The second generation GT Coupe uses a revived SL chassis. That means the hardtop will likely share some components with the soft top. However, the company says that each car will have a different target audience and purpose. So even though the basic architecture of these cars is identical, the manufacturer claims they will feel different. The SL appeals to those looking for a comfortable and high-speed open-air cruiser. Meanwhile, the GT aims to please those who prefer a more focused driving experience.

For the engine, AMG did not discuss the exact specifications. However, there is a good chance that the GT 53 will use a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that packs 469 horsepower (350 kilowatts). Meanwhile, the GT 63 may have a more powerful version of the twin-turbo V8, producing 577 horsepower (430 kilowatts). Those numbers come from the SL Roadster figures. The rumor mill also suggests a plug-in hybrid model with around 800 horsepower (597 kilowatts).
