Toyota recently unveiled the new rally model GR Corolla hatchback, which will be sold exclusively in America. This attractive hot hatchback borrows many key components from the GR Yaris, which is sold worldwide. The GR Corolla may have a similar powertrain to the GR Yaris, but unfortunately misses the sporty three-door layout of the Yaris. The New GR Corolla is the latest hot hatch from Toyota’s GR performance division, and this time it’s headed to the US market. Before the GR Corolla broke the cover, the special rally homologation of the GR Yaris captivated global customers who regularly hit the track with their Toyota hatchbacks. Now it’s America’s turn to enjoy Toyota’s recent passion for building some of the most capable hot hatchbacks on the road.
Apart from size, the biggest difference between the GR Corolla and GR Yaris is the number of doors. The smaller GR Yaris is a three-door hatch, while the more practical GR Corolla is a five-door hatch. While the five-door layout is more practical, it’s hard to argue with the beauty of this three-door render.
The new GR Corolla hits American shores with a turbocharged 300 horsepower (223 Kilowatts) 1.6-liter inline-3 mated exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission. The powerful G16E-GTS engine produces 100 horsepower (75 Kilowatts) per cylinder and uses intelligent engineering such as oil cooling jets, larger exhaust valves and engine cylinder heads to reliably deliver this power. This driver-focused drivetrain is paired with Toyota’s GR-Four performance all-wheel-drive system that can split torque distribution based on driving mode.
The GR Corolla comes in two trim levels with the standard model dubbed the Core or Performance-oriented Circuit trim. The latter adds a carbon fiber roof, front and rear limited-slip torque differential, and a more aggressive front hood.
Whichever GR Corolla trim you choose, it’s sure to be one of the best driving hatchbacks on the road. Three or five doors we are thrilled to see Toyota build this hot hot hatchback.
