Necessary or not, downsizing has an impact on all automakers. Just look at Mercedes and its plans to provide replacements for the C43 and C63 four-cylinder engines, thereby eliminating two cylinders from the former and four from the latter. However, the three-pointed star is one of the few automakers to still offer a twelve-cylinder engine, albeit not in the guise of the AMG S65 but rather as the Maybach S680. Speaking of luxobarge, the new AMG S63 is on its way.
Ahead of its official debut later this year, the full-size sports sedan was seen exercising in the ‘Ring gym’. It still packs a mighty V8, but with a hybrid twist as engineers add an electric motor. Indeed, the new S63 will be a PHEV with a combined output of around 700 horsepower. There are murmurs of a hotter version – perhaps an indirect successor to the S65 – with over 800 hp.
Believed to be called the S63e, this electrified sedan is seen striking the Nürburgring at full tilt. Seems agile enough for a car as big and heavy as a test driver rampage on challenging German tracks. Few owners will get their hands on their valuables this way, but Mercedes wants to make sure the electrified AMG S-Class can beat it.
Even after seeing thousands of spy videos, we still can’t grasp the idea of a big luxury sedan tackling the Nordschleife. Mercedes is pushing the S63e to tackle every last-minute kink ahead of its expected premiere later this year. Meanwhile, BMW is also working on a sporty and electrified derivative of the next 7 Series, believed to be called the M750e xDrive but with “only” around 560 hp.
With Mercedes saying it will be ready to go pure electric by 2030 where market conditions allow, it’s safe to say this will be the last V8-powered S63. It will be interesting to see how the E63 will form since a report from car mentions it will lose the V8 for the next generation model coming before 2025.
