Seeing one McLaren F1 is quite a rare experience, but Jodie Kidd saw seven of them at the Retromobile show in France. The tour guide is upscale car dealer and collector Simon Kidston.
Naturally, everything started from scratch. Kidd and Kidston check out the McLaren F1 XP3. This experimental prototype is the earliest example of an extant supercar. Creator Gordon Murray also uses this car as his personal car.

Next, they moved to the F1 GTR race car. This one is now street legal. Kidston notes that driving this down the road can be difficult as there is no air conditioning and the windows don’t open. It wouldn’t be a pleasant ride on a hot day.
They then checked out the black F1 which had a history with Kidston. He was the auctioneer when the buyer bought this car and brought it to England. Then, Kidston bought it.
From black to white example. This F1 only covers a distance of about 932 miles (1,500 kilometers).
The next example is the very rare F1 Longtail road car. This is a McLaren prototype for the model, and there are only two production examples.
They then checked out the F1 Longtail race car.
Saving the best for last, they moved to George Harrison’s custom purple F1. The famous musician befriends Gordon Murray and commissions a uniquely styled car. Harrison is a Hindu and covers the vehicle with the Aum symbol. Also, a small panel behind the driver’s seat opens to reveal an illuminated statue of Ganesha.
Harrison’s F1 hasn’t been showcased to the public since 1995, according to Kidston. Kidd seemed to get real joy from the opportunity to sit in it.
The final stop on this tour is to see some F1 memorabilia. For example, Fender and McLaren make a unique purple guitar and carbon fiber bodyguard to match the car. They even include an amp made to fit into a vehicle’s storage area.
They also checked the Snap-On toolbox which has customizable tools and a modem to allow technicians to diagnose car problems remotely. Each also comes with a Tag Heuer watch.
