The Super Cruise was first offered on the Cadillac Escalade for the 2021 model year, bringing the luxury brand’s advanced driver assistance features to the full-size SUV that defines its segment. The Super Cruise version, however, does not contain towing capabilities, but an upcoming update is on the way that will bring the ability to tow along with Super Cruise, along with the Auto Track Change feature.
Set to be available for select fifth-generation Cadillac Escalades from the 2021 and 2022 model years, the update will take place over the air, meaning vehicles can receive the upgraded software and install it remotely via an OnStar connection without traveling to the dealership.
According to Cadillac, “Trailering allows drivers the opportunity to tow trailers, campers and more while driving hands-free. Your journey will never be the same.” Previously, Cadillac warned drivers to avoid using the Super Cruise in trailers because the technology wasn’t programmed to handle the additional variable towing. However, this new update will now enable it.
Meanwhile, Automatic Line Changing allows Super Cruise-equipped vehicles to identify and independently make safe lane changes when detecting optimal conditions, activating and deactivating turn signals when required. Both of the aforementioned Super Cruise upgrades are available for use on 200,000 miles of North American highways where Super Cruise is compatible.
The paid upgrade is expected to be released sometime this summer. As of this writing, Cadillac has not released pricing information, only stating that it will be a paid update.
As we reported earlier this month, the 2021 model year Cadillac CT4 and CT5 luxury sedans are also eligible for an over-the-air update to bring new Super Cruise functionality. Obviously, the sedan doesn’t have trailer capabilities and therefore can’t receive a trailer upgrade, so just added Automatic Lane Change. Approximately 12,000 CT4, CT5 and Escalade combined units can receive the respective Super Cruise update.
The Cadillac Escalade is offered with two engine options: a naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 petrol motor (production code L87) with 420 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque, or a 3.0L I6 turbo-diesel (production code LM2) rated at 277 horsepower. horses and 460 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to the vehicle’s rear axle or to all four wheels.
The regular-length Escalade can pull a maximum of 8,200 pounds with the 6.2L petrol engine or 8,100 pounds with the 3.0L turbo-diesel on the 2WD models. Ratings dropped by 200 and 300 pounds, respectively, for the 4WD model. Meanwhile, the longer Escalade ESV is rated at a maximum towing capacity of 8,000 pounds with the 6.2L and 2WD petrol engines and 7,900 pounds with the 3.0L turbo-diesel on the 2WD models. Both ratings are down 200 pounds for the Escalade ESV 4WD model.
