While we know BMW has a refresh for its 3 Series lineup, this shot offers a curious way of looking at the updated model. Here’s what the revised wagon looks like in the German police livery.
Aside from the blue, white, and neon green color schemes, this updated model looks generally the same as the other revised Series 3 examples we looked at. There’s a tweaked front fascia and a slight tweak to the headlights. While BMW covers it with a lot of camouflage, the adjustments at the rear are so small they’re barely noticeable.

Our spies believe BMW is testing police cars to evaluate an updated model for service duty. Officers carry a lot of heavy equipment that requires adjustments to the suspension to handle frequent driving with extra loads.
If you want a good idea of what the updated Series 3 will look like, then the all-electric i3 that just launched for China is a good guide. This model has some of the adjustments we saw for the updated model.
The electric 3 Series produces 281 horsepower (210 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of instant torque. It can reach 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 6.2 seconds. The 66.1 kilowatt-hour battery provided an estimated 327 miles (526 kilometers) in China’s CLTC test. It can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 35 minutes.
It’s not clear when BMW intends to make a full debut on the updated 3 Series. However, we expect a reveal soon. Spy shots show the sedan, wagon, and Alpina variant each having tweaks down the road.
The updated range will include the long-awaited M3 Touring that will debut sometime in 2022. It will feature a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six that produces 503 hp (375 kW) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque. . . The powerplant is connected to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive. There are no plans to offer a manual. The result is all the capabilities of a sporty model with the extra storage capacity of a wagon.
