Here’s a fresh look at testing the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado in the rugged ZR2 trim. This one is down the street in the Detroit metropolitan area.
The truck is under two layers of camouflage. There is a wrap on the body and a cloth on it. Plus, there seems to be additional material under the cover to hide the grille as it looks different in other spy shots.

Looks like the new Colorado is getting separate headlights. Running lights are visible along the edges of the hood. A set of lights is visible under this strip. The hole in the center of the fabric cover is likely for the front-mounted camera. The slip plate is visible under the nose.
Along the sides, the development team installed a cover on the wheels. From these images, we can only see that they have a multi-spoke design. The truck uses Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires. The bars along the underbody seem to double as stone rails and side steps.
It’s hard to say for sure, but the taillights appear to be a production-spec unit. The exhaust has a bent pipe that exhausts gas behind the passenger side rear wheel.
Compared to standard Colorado spy shots, this ZR2 has a higher ride height. There seems to be a different front bumper which allows for a better approach angle.
Judging from the photos, the physical footprint for the new Colorado looks similar to the current generation of pickups. However, the styling got an overhaul. This platform is an evolution of the GMT31XX platform which is naturally referred to by the company as GTM31XX-2.
Mechanically, the new Colorado ZR2 reportedly comes with a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This factory version in the Silverado currently produces 310 horsepower (231 kilowatts) and 430 pound-feet (569 Newton-meters), but the tone for the rugged Colorado may be different.
Other mechanical details about the new ZR2 are less clear. It is possible that the truck will still use the Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve damper like the existing model.
We expect the new Colorado (and its GMC Canyon counterpart) to arrive in the US for the 2023 model year. The ZR2 and Canyon AT4X variants may arrive as 2023 products as well.
