The new Maserati GranTurismo is coming. From what we’ve seen so far in a disguised prototype, it looks like it should be an attractive coupe with some remaining power. That’s important, because Maserati’s track record for eye-catching designs is generally positive. Some people have of course been critical of several models over the years, including the previous-generation GranTurismo.
New video from Monkey Sketch address some of these issues, while creating an unofficial rendering that can preview the new model. Using a combination of spy imagery with some Maserati MC20 influences, the upcoming model is depicted with slightly more flare to the front fenders, smaller headlights, and a more aggressive stance that moves the wheels outward, filling the curve. In short, it’s a great display.
What’s interesting here is that the rendering doesn’t start with the GranTurismo spy photo. Often, such photos are modified to digitally “peel” the camouflage wrapper. Instead, MC20 serves as the basis for these renderings. The GranTurismo spy photo was used as a reference as this mid-engined supercar was digitally tweaked into a front-engined 2+2 coupe. However, the end result – while technically a fictional rendering – could be an accurate preview of Maserati’s cool new GT engine.
The automaker recently offered a teaser of the real deal, along with the official announcement that an insane 1,200 horsepower (224 kilowatt) all-electric version is coming. Maserati previewed the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore on March 17, showing a car sporting a simple body wrap with stripes on the back and a large trident on the sides, serving as a type of camouflage. The wrapper still hides smaller design details, and as a dedicated EV, it doesn’t have the same ventilation setup up front. It also gets a special set of wheels, but overall it’s a look at what the internal combustion model will look like.
When will all the guesses turn into facts? It has to happen soon, maybe very soon. The GranTurismo was originally supposed to debut in late 2021 but was delayed until 2022. When it breaks, we expect the top-of-the-range version to have the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine used in the MC20, where it makes 621 hp (463 kilowatts). An all-electric version of the Folgore will follow in 2023.
