Toyota files a new trademark at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Trademark for TX550h+, under the classification “cars and their structural parts.” The trademark was submitted on March 16, 2022.
This will be the third trademark application by the Japanese automaker with respect to the TX, following the TX350 and TX500h trademark filings in 2020; both are still marked as “alive” as of this writing.
As we all know, this alphanumeric naming convention is used on Lexus vehicles, Toyota’s luxury arm. ‘X’ indicates that the vehicle is an SUV/crossover while ‘h’ indicates that it is a hybrid.

The ‘+’ designation is rather new, representing Lexus’ plug-in hybrid powertrain. This was first seen on the second-generation Lexus NX, which was the first car to be equipped with the powertrain.
That said, it looks like the rumored upcoming Lexus TX will get a plug-in hybrid powertrain, side by side in the range with a non-plug-in hybrid and one powered by a pure internal combustion engine.
The key word here is issue, as it was almost a decade ago when the first reports of the upcoming Lexus TX surfaced. It is said that the three-row unibody TX will replace the aging GX – a body-on-frame SUV based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
Of course, a trademark application is not a confirmation that the Lexus TX is actually the case. The model’s rare spy shot does not support the report. But at the very least, we know that there have been developments of late – one leading to electrification.
Let’s all take this speculation with a healthy grain of salt. In the end, filing a trademark may just mean that Toyota is protecting the word mark if it ever needs to be in the future.
