There are two all-electric pickups available now, with more to come. But until the others arrive, we can put the two we have against each other in a drag race. That’s exactly what the YouTube channel Throttle House did, pairing the new GMC Hummer EV against the Rivian R1T. The channel also includes a Tesla Model X in a race to serve as a benchmark of sorts.
The Hummer EV is much more powerful than the Rivian, but also much heavier. GMC tipped the scales at 9,046 pounds (4,103 kilograms). The Rivian is not “light”, but is 1,900 lbs (861 kg) lighter than the Hummer, weighing in at 7,148 lbs (3,242 kg). Rivian would need an advantage as his strength dwindled. The Rivian produces 835 horsepower (622 kilowatts) and 908 pound-feet (1,231 Newton-meters) of torque, while the Hummer pumps out 1,000 hp (745 kW) and 1,200 lb-ft (1,626 Nm) of torque.
Although both are electric pickups, their differences are quite evident in the first few seconds of the first race. The Tesla Model X left the two trucks in the dust, with the lighter Rivian off the track ahead of the heavier Hummer. The Hummer was unable to close the gap, hitting the speed limiter of 106 miles per hour (170 kilometers per hour) and taking seconds. The R1T also has a limiter, but Rivian lets it hit 115 mph (185 kph).
The two trucks then lined up for a rolling race, which should negate some of Rivian’s advantage. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Rivian simply pulled away from the Hummer, which was too heavy to compete with the R1T. While the Hummer EV offers a Watts to Freedom mode and plenty of power, which drops the truck down for optional performance, it’s still a heavy pickup that has to fight the realities of physics.
The next few years will see more electric pickups arrive, although they won’t all be as high-powered as the two. The Ford F-150 Lightning will produce up to 563 hp (419 kW), while the Silverado EV will offer 664 hp (495 kW). A higher powered variant might be a possibility, but we may have to wait for it. Until then, though, there’s plenty of horsepower between the Hummer and Rivian to keep us entertained for a while.
