2023 Maserati Grecale Debuts With V6 Trofeo And Four Screens

The MC20 is the more attractive model of Maserati’s new wave of products, but everyone at Modena believes the Grecale has a license to print money. Finally, a smaller crossover positioned below the Levante is here to take on the Porsche Macan. After some teasers and delays caused by the lack of a microchip, relatively high-riding vehicles with the Trident logo debut in GT, Modena, and Trofeo flavors.

Named after the northeast Mediterranean wind, the combustion engine Grecale is featured alongside a purely electric derivative section of the recently announced Forgole range. The EV will hit the market a year after the petrol model with a similar look, except for a different grille with curved grille blades and aerodynamic wheels.

It looks very sporty without the Levante being scaled down to 75 percent. Some worried it would look a lot like a Ford Puma because of some of the headlight similarities, but the Grecale has a visual identity of its own. It’s especially attractive in the Trofeo guise with the wider air intake sections of the aggressive body kit.

At the heart of the top-spec version is a 3.0-liter V6 taken from the MC20, complete with a pair of turbochargers. It develops a healthy 523 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 620 Newton-meters (457 pound-feet) from 3,000 rpm. The six-cylinder punch is enough to allow the Grecale to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.8 seconds. Flat, it will do 177 mph (285 km/h).

The Grecale Trofeo has been engineered with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission that sends all that power to an AWD setting with a limited-slip electronic rear differential. The four-cylinder version, also sporting an all-paw layout, had the difference of an open engine or a limited slip engine along with a different version of the eight-speed automatic.

Speaking of lower-end models, the entry-level GT uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with mild hybrid technology. It pushes out a still respectable 296 hp at 5,750 rpm and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) from 2,000 rpm while the Modena increases the total horsepower to 325 hp while maintaining the same level of torque. Sprint takes 5.6 seconds for the base model or 0.3 seconds less for the mid-range model. Both can do 149 mph (240 km/h).

Maserati would also like to share some early specs about the zero-emission Forgole. Available in the exclusive Rame Folgore paint, the Grecale EV will come with a sizeable 105-kWh battery and will use 400V technology. The electric motor will produce an almost instant combined torque of 800 Nm (590 lb-ft).

The famous Italian marque said the new Grecale measures 4,846 mm (191 in), 1,979 mm (77.9 in) wide and 1,670 mm (66 in) high. The 1,948 mm (77 in) rear wheel track is extended by 34 mm (1.34 in) for the hotter Modena and Trofeo. All three share a wheelbase that stretches to 2,901 mm (114 in), prompting Maserati to say there’s plenty of legroom for rear passengers.

On the subject of interiors, the Grecale is the latest example of cramming in more screen real estate. You’d be surprised to hear there are technically four screens. In addition to the clear digital driver display and a pair of touchscreens on the center console, the clock is also a display. The instrument cluster and the top touch screen are both 12.3 inches in size while the bottom screen has a diagonal of 8.8 inches. The latter has swallowed conventional buttons and knobs to control climate settings.

If you want that extra display, Maserati will sell its new crossover with an optional HUD, promising segment-leading viewing angles, contrast and brightness. For more money, the Grecale can lose the standard 19-inch wheels for the larger 20 or 21-inch sets. You can also use the high-end 21-speaker Sonus faber sound system with 1,000 watts of power.

Europe will be the first region to get a crossover in the first half of the year, with the US, Canada and Latin American countries selected to follow this fall.
