Shelby American commemorates the 100th anniversary of its founder’s birth in the most Carroll Shelby way. That means a hot-rod version of the 2023 Mustang GT, supercharged to produce 750 horsepower, blows exhaust fumes from the Borla cat-back exhaust system. To be precise, Shelby American only plans to do 100 centenary issues. Unfortunately all of them sold out within four days of the prototype showing in Gardena, California.
The Shelby American team was less strict with this one. Want fastback? Of course. Open top car? you got it. Manual transmission? Sign here. Automatic transmission? If you say so. Not to like are the non-stock, Mach 1, or California Special colors of the Mustangs. Basically, as long as the badge says “GT” and the title says 2023, you’re safe.
Shelby American was adamant that the upgrade was about more than just increasing horsepower figures. The front fender was wider, the stock wheels were replaced with 20 x 11 Shelby wheels, and the stock rubber was swapped for 305/30/20 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S performance tires, providing more stick. The Shelby’s ventilated hood improves airflow, while the Shelby Performance Radiator takes care of cooling. The suspension was reworked, adding performance anti-roll bars and springs, as well as adjustable camber and caster plates. Additionally, donor cars that appear without the Ford Performance Pack get Performance Pack brakes for the front axle.
Visually, Shelby American leaves no stone unturned. The Shelby name adorns every wheel, top grille, both door sill plates, floor mats, hood top, etc. Sillhouettes in Shelby’s hats can be found in many places. Hood? Inspect. Headrest? Inspect. Back badge? You betcha. If that’s not Shelby enough, the 100 customers who place their orders quickly enough also get a custom black Stetson hat and a copy of the Shelby Centennial Book published by Tim Shelby. Package prices start at $49,995, excluding the price of the donor car. What a fitting way to honor a late legend.
