The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be injecting Italian blood into the subcompact luxury crossover fray. With sexy bodywork accentuated by Alfa Romeo’s signature sharp nosed face, the Tonale is sure to turn heads. The company also promises to be satisfying to drive, with fully independent suspension and adaptive dampers available. Power comes from a 285-hp plug-in-hybrid powertrain with an estimated electric range of over 30 miles. Sport the elevated driving position and standard all-wheel drive that SUV buyers crave—as well as the potential for a high-powered Quadrifoglio model—and the 2024 Tonale will be an exciting new entry in a class that includes the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA250 and Volvo XC40.
What’s New for 2024?
The Tonale made its debut in concept form at the 2019 Geneva auto show. Now, Alfa has released photos and official information that gives us a much better idea of what the new little Italian ute has to offer. The company said Tonale will enter US showrooms starting in the first quarter of 2023.
Price and Which One to Buy
Since the Tonale already starts slightly taller than most rivals, we’ll hold back and go with the mid-range Ti trim. We don’t have the full range of standard Ti features, but we know it comes with added luxuries like heated front seats, heated steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging pad, interior ambient lighting, and power-operated rear seats. elevator door.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
Tonale is offered with one powertrain and all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid features a 1.3-liter turbo four-cylinder and rear axle-mounted electric motors that produce a combined 285 horsepower. Alfa equipped the plug-in Tonale with a six-speed automatic and a 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that is said to provide more than 30 miles of electric-only driving range. All models use fully independent suspensions; adaptive damper is optional. So far we’ve only had a chance to sample the European model, which is powered by a weaker hybrid powertrain than what we’ll get here in North America. We’ll have to wait to drive a US-spec model to substantiate Alfa’s claims, but the brand promises a driving experience that will stay true to its “race-inspired DNA”.
Real World Fuel and MPG Savings
While the EPA has yet to release a fuel economy estimate for the Tonale, its plug-in hybrid powertrain could provide an efficiency advantage over non-hybrid rivals such as the GLA250 and X1. For more information on Tonale’s fuel economy, visit EPA website.
Interior, Comfort and Cargo
Inside, the circular air vents and driver-centric dashboard layout are clearly evolved from the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV. The dashboard also features a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and the three-spoke steering wheel provides a modern twist on a classic design. A pair of protruding paddle shifters are also available. The interior features a mix of aluminum trim and leather and microsuede surfaces. The front seats look very supportive, and stylish too, with red contrast stitching and Alfa Romeo crests on the headrests.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Each Tonale comes standard with a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It features the Uconnect 5 software which is shared with many other models under the Stellantis umbrella. Along with a customizable home screen, it offers multiple interfaces that can be configured with up to five unique user profiles. Standout standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and wireless phone charging.

Alfa offers a smorgasbord of standard technologies on the Tonale’s driver assistance menu, from automatic emergency braking to adaptive cruise control.
