2022 VW Golf R With 520 HP Hits 202 MPH On Pitch-Black Autobahn

We’ve already shared two high-speed laps of the Volkswagen Golf 8 on the Autobahn, so is there really a need for a third video? Yes, there is, because this is no ordinary compact hatchback from Wolfsburg. While the previous two models were a lowly 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TDI model, now we can see the mighty R flexing its muscles in the infinite sections of the majestic German highway.

Its 2.0 TSI engine is far from stock as the turbocharged four-pot has been brought up to a hefty 520 horsepower (387 kilowatts) and 629 Newton-meters (464 pound-feet) of torque thanks to the 2nd stage kit from HGP. The tuner installed large 380 mm ceramic brake discs on the front axle to handle the extra power generated by the EA888 Evo4’s amplified engine.

To test those impressive output figures, the car stretched its legs in the late hours on the Autobahn when traffic was lighter. Reaching 325 km/h (202 mph) is an impressive feat considering it’s still a four-cylinder Golf at the end of the day. To achieve it may be more extraordinary because it only takes 7.53 seconds from 62 to 124 mph (100 to 200 km/h).

It’s safe to say the Golf R by HGP has received tons of mods to unlock the level of speed that we normally associate only with supercars. From dedicated turbochargers and K&N air filters to Wagner intercoolers and aftermarket exhausts, the hyper hatch is now a bit of a sleeper.

Excluding the tuner sticker, the only gift that has been modified is represented by 19-inch OZ wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires and KW coilover suspension. It’s still sad the five-cylinder Golf R with the Audi RS3 engine never happened, but the aftermarket scene is poised to offer a worthy replacement.

Some will recall the same tuning company also extracting nearly 1,000 horsepower from the Lamborghini Urus. The Italian Super SUV sprints in 2.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 211 mph (340 km/h).
