Some say the Ferrari 599 is one of the best cars that Modena has launched in the last 20 years. This is a significant leap forward compared to its predecessor, the 575M, in design and performance. The 599 also came out in one of the best eras for Ferrari, having launched the Enzo, F430, and 599 respectively.
While impressive, how does the 599 fare compare to modern performance cars? The recent Petrolhead Spring event in the Netherlands answered that question. This is a 599 veteran mostly against cars half its age.
But before we tell you how it happened, let’s take a look at the 599 stats. The car used in the drag event is the HGTE (Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione). However, the handling package does nothing for the machine. The 599 HGTE retains the standard model’s output of 612 horsepower (456 kilowatts) and 448 pound-feet (608 Newton-meters) of torque.
According to official Ferrari figures, the 6.0-liter V12 can propel 599 to 62 mph (100 km/h) from rest in 3.7 seconds. It can also sprint from 0 to 124 mph (0 to 200 km/h) in 11.1 seconds, and its top speed is 205 mph (330 km/h).
One of the first cars the 599 faced was the Hamann-tuned BMW X5M. While BMW’s all-wheel-drive system gave it a quick run, Ferrari’s V12 finally rolled it. The 599 also goes head to head with the latest generation M3, the AMG GT, and even one of its contemporaries, the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.
You will see 599 wins and losses in a few rounds. As impressive as it was about 15 years ago, the race shows how far the goalposts of cars have come since 2007. On the other hand, we also see the grand touring of Ferrari still holding out against the younger cars.
