Volkswagen Group of America has announced a voluntary recall for the Atlas SUV. Covering a total of 222,892 units, which includes the smaller Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, the voluntary recall is aimed at fixing possible side airbag issues.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released documents supporting the recall. According to NHTSA’s Section 573 Security Withdrawal Report, SUV side airbags “may inflate more slowly than designed.” Needless to say, this poses a safety risk in the event that side airbag deployment is required.

According to the report, the main cause of the fault was the small movement of the wire harness from the A-Pilar terminal to the front door, which could damage the surface of the wire terminal. Damage to the surface can result in corrosion which can then lead to electrical disconnection to the front door components.

Affected vehicles may have airbag warning lights on, although extreme cases may cause windows to drop unexpectedly, parking brake applied at low speed, and warning of a faulty door sensor.

The recall report states that 113,899 VW Atlas FL 2021-2023 units manufactured from October 4, 2019 to February 10, 2022 are covered in the recall. Meanwhile, a total of 32,720 VW Atlas 2019-2020 units were also included, manufactured from August 1, 2019 to March 6, 2020. On the other hand, 76,273 units of the 2020-2023 VW Atlas Cross Sport were also recalled, produced from September 25, 2019 to February 10, 2022. .

Dealers and owners will be notified by the company on May 10, 2022. VW said they will offer a replacement program under this recall.
