Summary
The Ford Expedition is a solid, all-purpose—read that as “large”—three-row SUV. It comes in two lengths, the standard Max (humongous) and even more humongous, and the lineup includes the Timberline model, which is well-equipped for off-road travel. Unlike its equally large rival from GM and Stellantis-as Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukonand Jeep Wagoneers—it doesn’t offer a naturally aspirated V-8 engine option. Instead, the Expedition is powered by Ford’s acclaimed twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, which develops up to 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque in its most powerful model. A clever 10-speed automatic takes care of shifting duties for all 2023 Expedition, and customers can choose between rear- or four-wheel drive setups. Although previously a V-8, the Expedition is still not exactly fuel-efficient but fast: it can haul most up to 60 miles per hour in less than five seconds when equipped with the Stealth Performance package. Additionally, it has a towing capacity of 9,300 pounds and can carry more than 1,750 pounds of payload onboard. wade have also equipped the Expedition with all the latest safety and connectivity tools, making it a reasonable and well-rounded choice for buyers of the XXL SUV. That said, its compromising interior materials and trucker character put it at a disadvantage compared to its Chevy, GMC, and Jeep rivals.
What’s New for 2023?
The Expedition is getting minor updates for the 2023 model year, including a new Iconic Silver exterior color option for the Platinum model. Other color-related changes include the black painted fog lamp bezels for the Special Edition model and the black onyx interior color combo for the Timberlines. Timberline models also now come standard with the Trail 1 Pedal Drive feature.
Price and Which One to Buy
We think the middle-of-the-road Limited trim level on the regular wheelbase Expedition is the one to get. Not only does it have a nice mix of standard features (leather upholstered seats, Bang & Olufsen stereo, and power-operated running boards), but it’s also available with interesting performance options that should make big rigs better to ride. Opting for the Stealth Performance package brought a sportier suspension setup, a more powerful engine (440 hp versus 375), and different dark exterior details, including 22-inch wheels. All-wheel drive – for those who need it – costs around $3000 extra.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
Motivating the Expedition is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission that pairs with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The standard engine produces 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque but on the Limited model the output is increased to 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet. Higher output versions are available in Timberline trim and in Limited with the Stealth Performance package which increases those figures to 440 horses and 510 pound-feet. Timber Line models accelerates to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds on our test line, outperformed The Tahoe Z71 was V-8 powered at a whopping 2.4 seconds; Stealth Performance models shaved 0.2 seconds from Timberline time. All Expeditions use independent rear suspension. While passengers are amused by its smooth ride, drivers are punished with awkward handling and imprecise steering feel. Expeditions can tow up to 9,300 pounds, while the longer Expedition Max rating is limited to 9,000 pounds.
Real World Fuel and MPG Savings
These heavyweight carriers are certainly not helping to conserve fossil fuels. Ford claims its EcoBoost technology, which swaps the large naturally-aspirated V-8 for a smaller, more efficient twin-turbocharged V-6. But the Expedition did not live up to that promise. The EPA hasn’t released its ranking for the 2023 model year, but we expect it to stay the same since none of the truck’s hardware has changed. For reference, the rear driver is rated at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway; the all-wheel-drive version drops to 16 mpg city and highway mpg. The Expedition and Expedition Max make 20 mpg on our fuel-efficient 75 mph route, which is part of the our extensive testing regimen. Interior, Comfort and Cargo
The Expedition’s cabin materials and trim pieces grew more luxurious from model to model, complementing the Platinum trim, which features rich leather upholstery and massaging front seats. Both the regular Expedition and the long-wheelbase Expedition Max have roomy interiors and—unlike some rivals—a third row that doesn’t torment adults. Three seater seats are standard for the second row, but you can specify a pair of captain seats if you wish. The Max also offers unbeatable interior cubby storage. Each model has a power-folding third row that can be controlled from the cargo area or rear seats. The second and third rows fold completely flat for a flat floor, making loading easier.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Expedition comes standard with a large 12.0-inch touchscreen that runs Ford’s Sync4 infotainment software. Along with the ability to receive over-the-air updates, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless features. Subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspots are also available, as is a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo and rear-seat entertainment system. If the standard touch screen isn’t big enough, the Expedition can also be equipped with a vertically oriented 15.5-inch unit, which can also be found inside the battery-electric one. Mustang Mach-E.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
Along with an assortment of standard and optional driver assistance technology, The expedition offers two very advanced equipment. The top-of-the-line Platinum model comes with Ford’s hands-free driving feature called BlueCruise. The off-road-oriented Timberline trim features Trail Turn Assist which provides the SUV with a narrower turning radius by braking the inside rear wheels in sharp, slow turns when the vehicle is in four-wheel drive mode and on soft ground. This useful feature is also found in Ford Bronko. For more information on Expedition crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) website. Key safety features include:
- Standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
- Lane departure warning and lane maintenance assistance are available
- Adaptive cruise control is available
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Ford gave the Expedition a solid warranty, even beating Mercedes-Benz in the powertrain department. However, no free scheduled maintenance is offered.
- The limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- The powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- No free scheduled maintenance
