The tug of war between the different cars doesn’t really reveal anything profound about their capabilities. However, that doesn’t make them any less fun to watch, as the new Carwow video shows. The channel garnered quite a number of competing combinations – the Suzuki Jimny, Ford Ranger, and 1965 Massey-Ferguson tractor. It was a fun trio.
Suzuki isn’t a powerhouse, but it doesn’t need to be in this contest. This bite-sized boxy SUV packs a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 101 horsepower (75 kilowatts) and 95 pound-feet (130 Newton-meters) of torque. It has four-wheel drive and low-range mode but there is no locking difference. It tipped the scales at 2,425 pounds (1,100 kilograms).
The tractor uses a 2.5-liter Perkins three-cylinder engine that produces 45 hp (34 kW), and only drives the rear wheels. This tractor is heavier than the Jimny at 3,306 lbs (1,500 kilograms). Heavier vehicles often have the upper hand in this competition, although the Jimny drives all four wheels compared to a two-wheel tractor.
Those extra wheels weren’t enough for Suzuki to overcome the laws of physics. The first fight brought Suzuki to a halt, giving the tractor the first win. The second tug didn’t bring the SUV to a stop a second time, but it couldn’t cope with the heavier tractor, missing a second lap. The protruding tractor tread likely helps it find traction on wet, muddy ground.
The video then pits the Ford Ranger against a tractor, with the truck using a 2.0-liter diesel, four-wheel drive, and locking rear differential in the competition. The engine produces 170 hp (126 kW) and 309 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque, and the truck is heavier than a tractor. The first half failed, with Ranger stalled, but Ranger had no trouble pulling the tractor in the rematch.
The final competition pits the tractor and the Jimny against the Ranger. While the Ranger had more power than the other two combined, it wasn’t enough for another win, with Suzuki and the tractor easily pulling the Ranger out. The Ford weighs 4,448 lbs (2,018 kg). This competition shows that weight is still important in the tug-of-war.
