Porsche 718 All-Electric Sports Car Announced For 2025 Launch

Get the 718 Boxster/Cayman with combustion engine while you still can as Porsche has announced the next generation will be an EV-only affair. The revelation was made at the company’s annual conference where the 911 Hybrid was reconfirmed as a non-PHEV model. In a purely electric guise, the smaller model from Zuffenhausen is still referred to as a mid-engined car. Instead of a combustion engine, the battery will sit between the axles.

Porsche’s third EV after next year’s Taycan and Macan, the zero-emissions 718 duo will be the company’s first car on the Premium Platform Electric. The PPE is being developed with Audi, which will launch the Q6 E-Tron equivalent. Additionally, Four Rings is preparing an ICE-less A6 E-Tron, complete with a wagon derivative previewed earlier this week by the stunning Avant concept.

Porsche has made it abundantly clear that it is only a matter of time before the 718 will lose its petrol engine. At IAA Munich in September 2021, it unveiled the Mission R as a track-only concept car. The next production version for the road won’t be as radical, so don’t expect more than 1,000 peak horsepower like the show cars have.

The Mission R catapulted to 62 mph (100 km/h) in two and a half seconds before hitting a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h). It produces a constant output of 680 hp from its pair of electric motors, which gives it AWD. Despite being an EV, the concept only weighs about 1,500 kilograms (3,306 pounds). To put that number into perspective, it’s only 85 kg (187 lbs) more than the weight of the Cayman GT4 RS.

Although the Mission R is based on a Cayman chassis, the 2025 production model will be an entirely new development, without carrying any parts of its predecessor ICE. Why? Because using old bones would require “too many compromises,” according to Oliver Blume. He went on to say some of the modules would be shared with other vehicles, but the platform itself would be bespoke.

The next-generation Macan, 911 Hybrid, and 718 Boxster/Cayman will help Porsche achieve its decarbonization goals: 50 percent of annual sales will be represented by hybrids and pure electric cars by 2025 and 80 percent will be EV-only by 2030.
