Technically, this is not a spy shot of the Ford Bronco. It’s not a new trim level, nor does it hide the facelifted sheet metal under the camouflage wrap. In fact, its colorful exterior emblazoned with various company logos is the complete opposite of camouflage, as this off-roader stands out like the proverbial sore thumb. Riding high with big tires that stick far beyond the fenders helps in that department too.
Hardcore Ford Bronco fans may recognize this vehicle. It was built last year by Expedition Vehicle Outfitters in Michigan, working with Dana Incorporated to showcase all kinds of upgrades available for the reborn off-roader. That’s why Dana (and according to the association, Spicer) has such a prominent brand in the Bronco. As for the red-white-blue color scheme, it’s not just any design. It pays homage to the off-road Rough Riders team from the 1990s, which Ford supported in various off-road events.
Some of the modifications include a Dana 60 axle at the rear and a Spicer CV axle at the front, adjustable coilover suspension, improved control arms, a beefy driveshaft, all the things you’d expect for a hardcore 4×4. The tires are arguably the most eye-catching here, as they measure 40 inches on sweet beadlock wheels. Even with a special pair of fenders, the tires don’t come close to fitting under the Bronco.
And now for the million dollar question. Ford Performance is also involved with this rig – it brought parts like the light bar above the windshield, and was on display at the Ford Performance booth for last year’s SEMA event. These photos capture the truck near Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, but to be specific, it’s driving through a business park where the likes of Roush and Ford Performance are fiddling with vehicles. Could it be that some additional Blue Oval upgrades are in the works?
It’s certainly not uncommon to see a show truck like this for a leisurely stroll. Anyway, our spy team took some photos because hey, wouldn’t you snap some if you saw a custom Bronco hanging out on a Ford Performance playground?
