Ferrari is a car manufacturer who loves racing. It is an integral part of the company’s history, and will continue that trend with the new Ferrari 296 GT3. Ferrari isn’t ready to give a full rundown of the car yet, but has released a design sketch that previews the design. It will look different from the road version, with other changes made under the hood.
The Ferrari 296 GTB uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine paired to an electric motor that produces a combined 818 horsepower (610 kilowatts) and 546 pound-feet (XX Newton-meters) of torque. It won’t be the powertrain in the 296 GT3. Racing regulations forced Ferrari to discontinue the hybrid setup, leaving only the V6 engine to power the car. The company did not disclose details of the car’s performance.
The 296 GT3 will replace the 488 GT3 and 488 GT3 Evo, which Ferrari calls “the most successful car” in the company’s racing history, leaving new drivers with a huge paddock to fill. The 488 GT3 has won 107 titles since its 2020 debut, with 770 starts and 429 wins under the bumper. Ferrari gave the 488 GT3 some track upgrades over the road model, and the company will do the same with the 296.
The sketch shows the 296 GT3 looking sharper than the base GTB, with the roof and greenhouse looking very different. However, this can be an illusion from the sketch.
The car sports a larger front splitter, which sits under a revised front bumper that should emphasize cooling and aerodynamics. The sketch also reveals a large vent located above the front fender. Complementing the car’s aero upgrades is a large rear wing designed to keep the rear-wheel-drive supercar planted to the asphalt.
Ferrari didn’t say when we’d get full disclosure of its new race car, however, the company said the car was already in development. The GT3 will also mark the return of the six-cylinder Ferrari to the track. Its development will begin “in the coming months” before making its racing debut in 2023. Our spy photographers might be able to catch a glimpse of it before the official reveal, which we’ll share with you.
