When most people think of Winnebago, the image of a large motorhome speeding down the highway comes to mind. The 64-year-old company is arguably most famous for such vehicles, and the iconic design certainly helped Winnebago reach important milestones. The 500,000th Winnie was just built, but it wasn’t a bulky motorhome with artful swooshes on the sides. This is a rugged Revel 4×4 overlanding camper van based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
The Revel was recently launched from its Winnebago facility in Iowa in no small amount, as seen in the video above. The RV manufacturer said it was the first in the industry to reach such a milestone, and to celebrate, all operations were suspended so employees could take part in the event.
“Winnebago was a pioneer in the RV category, producing its first vehicles more than 60 years ago,” said Huw Bower, president of Winnebago. “However, the 500,000th motorhome represents more than just longevity in the marketplace. For our 2,700 employees, it represents the millions of incredible experiences among friends and family that Winnebago has made possible over decades. This accomplishment would not have been possible without their tireless dedication.”
The Revel is actually a very short piece of Winnebago history. Launched just four years ago, the Sprinter-based Class B RV is a sign of the times with its four-wheel drive and extra ground clearance to get away from traditional roads and campsites. Available on a single floor plan, designed to accommodate two people with an electric lift bed at the back that converts into a living room. A fully equipped bathroom with shower and cassette toilet is in the center, along with a kitchenette containing a stainless steel sink and refrigerator. It carries 21 gallons of fresh water with a capacity of 21 gallons for gray water.
Power comes from two 124-amp-hour lithium batteries that can be charged via solar power, a dedicated alternator on the engine, or shore power. A 2,000-watt inverter is part of the package, and it all comes packaged in a four-season van with heating and air conditioning systems.
However, these features come at a price. Revel starts at over $200,000, but Winnebago is definitely doing something right. In addition to reaching 500,000 units built, the manufacturer says the Revel is the category leader for rugged off-road campers.
