Prodrive Hunter Debuts As All-Terrain Supercar With 600 Horsepower


If you’re tired of waiting for the Porsche 911 Safari/Dakar or Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato, Prodrive will be happy to point you to its own all-terrain supercar. Meet the Hunter, which is basically a road version of the BRX Hunter T1+ Dakar Rally car. It largely retains the look of the competition version, but because it doesn’t have to comply with class rules, it has more than 50 percent power.

Indeed, at the heart of the Hunter is a Ford-supplied 3.5-liter V6 engine tweaked by Prodrive to produce over 600 horsepower and 700 Newton-meters (516 pound-feet) of torque. The powerful twin-turbo mill helps the supercar to an anywhere near 62 mph (100 km/h) from rest in under four seconds. Flat, it will do almost 186 mph (300 km/h).

The maximum speed is absolutely incredible for a car equipped with 35-inch off-road tires that are primarily intended for rough roads rather than smooth asphalt. However, top speed is only possible with road-oriented rubber.

The Prodrive Hunter is a true adventure vehicle thanks to its double-wishbone front and rear suspension with 400 millimeters (15.7 inches) of travel. Interestingly, it’s actually 50 mm (nearly two inches) larger than the Dakar-spec engine.

Prodrive has equipped the Hunter with a six-speed paddle-shift gearbox that routes all that power to the four-wheel drive system. The outdoor beast has front, center, and rear differences, not to mention adjustable dampers and a giant fuel tank that holds 480 liters (127 gallons). The car uses 8.5J x 172 forged alloy wheels with six-piston calipers paired with ventilated disc sections of the racing-spec braking system.

As you might have guessed, the Prodrive Hunter isn’t exactly cheap. It costs £1.25 million ($1.63 million at current exchange rates), and that’s before taxes. Production in Banbury, England will be limited to 25 units and the first has been sold to Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa of Bahrain. Quell was surprised…

It’s likely the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato and Porsche 911 Safari/Dakar will both be much cheaper, but we’ll see if they’ll be able to match the Hunter’s all-terrain capabilities. In an interview with carProdrive chairman David Richards called it the “desert Ferrari.”

Fun fact – the car brochure bears the famous Back to the Future line: “Where we are going, we don’t have to walk.” Of course!
