The Hyundai Kona is one of the brand’s newer models, but has improved the sales chart. It barely exceeds last year’s Sonata sales, but we’ll be interested to see what happens when the next-gen model arrives. New spy shots show the crossover with a bit of camouflage while revealing more of the revamped interior. The photos also reveal a potential powertrain, although it may not arrive in the US model.
We’ve seen the interior before, catching a glimpse of the digital instrument cluster in the previous spy shot. The new photos also show the interior, although the Hyundai hides the dashboard from view. However, we can still see the redesigned door panels, center armrests and seats. The new gauge cluster will likely be paired with a digital infotainment display on the dashboard.

The redesigned Kona will continue to offer a variety of powertrains – from petrol to electric. Spy shots show that the model will offer a 1.6-liter unit for the Korean market, which will be paired with a dual-clutch transmission and drive the front wheels of the crossover. It’s unclear if it will be available in the US version. There are no details on the electric powertrain, but the battery and electric motor should offer increased performance over the previous model. Hyundai will likely continue to offer the Kona N Line to the next generation as well.
It’s hard to tell in photos, but our spies tell us that the next-gen Kona will grow in size compared to the previous model. It will also adopt a new front-end styling that doesn’t stray too far from the designs introduced with the first-generation model, such as the split headlamps. The new Kona will retain this feature, although the lower headlights will likely have a vertical orientation to keep the design in line with other Hyundai models.
We don’t know how complete the Kona looks under its camouflage and cladding, but the spy shots look promising. It’s still early 2022, but we don’t expect Hyundai to reveal the new Kona until early next year. We would have liked a late 2022 debut, but we don’t have that kind of power. It will likely launch in other markets before arriving in US showrooms.
