1937 Talbot-Lago Sells For $13.4M, Sets Auction Record For Marquee

How much would you pay for a car? $50,000? $500,000? One person spent over $13 million to acquire the beautiful and rare 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe. It was sold earlier this month at a Gooding and Company auction on Amelia Island. The price of the last hammer for the car is $13.425,000making it the most valuable French car ever sold at auction and a world record for the marquee.

The T150-C-SS chassis, number 90107, supports the bodywork designed by Figoni et Falaschi. According to auction house research, the company designs between 10 and 20 Teardrop Coupes, and they are made in two flavors – the notchback Coupé Jeancart and the fastback Modele New York. The body of the New York Modele, of which only two were built, features aluminum construction, and it is the only surviving example with an intact body.

Talbot leaves the factory in blue with gray fenders. It features a competitively styled exhaust header, painted wire wheels, and a sunroof. The car’s color changed to beige with red fenders for the 1938 Concours d’Elegance Fémina. It appeared alongside two other Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Coupes. The car was later sold to Thomas Stewart Lee of Los Angeles, who owned two other T150-C-SS Coupes. Lee repainted it dark red.

The car went through several more owners before being painted white and stuck in a California garage for 40 years until 2002. The restored 90107 debuted at the 2005 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and made an outing to the 2007 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, earning Best of Show. It earned the First in Class trophy at Pebble Beach. The car is a beautiful example of early automotive design.

Powering the Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe 1937 is a 4.0-liter inline-six engine with three Zenith-Stomberg carburetors producing 140 horsepower (104 kilowatts). It has a four-speed Wilson pre-selector gearbox, four-wheel mechanical brakes, front independent suspension and live rear axle. Both have semi-elliptical leaf springs.

The car is over 80 years old, and it would be nice to see it reach a hundred years old, although the vehicle did disappear for 40 years at one point. We hope it doesn’t disappear again.
