We don’t always show crazy custom cars on Motor1.com. When we do, it’s usually something downright crazy like a giant V8-powered roller skate, or a Ford Taurus with more horsepower than a Bugatti Veyron. This Ford Explorer ST looks nothing like footwear, and it doesn’t have four-figure horsepower (yet). But in the world of modified Detroit muscle cars, this 10-second SUV is simply awesome.
For the record, the stock Ford Explorer ST 2020 isn’t boring. Its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 produces 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts), and with the help of sticky summer tires, it can hit 60 mph in about five seconds. That’s not bad for a three-row SUV, but Kevin Krupski wanted a little more. When the COVID lockdown hit in 2020, he went a little crazy and started looking for ways to modify his family’s truck driver. Apparently, no one warned Kevin ahead of time that, once you embark on a modification path, it will forever dominate your destiny.

It starts off quite simply. Modern turbocharged vehicles generally respond well to engine tone, and as a Ford muscle explained, Kevin went for a 100-hp upgrade. He loved it, and things escalated like crazy from there. Unfortunately, the Ford Explorer doesn’t really have a strong aftermarket, so even something as simple as an exhaust upgrade requires a special touch. He found a friend at FenFabrication, creating an exhaust system that looked more like a work of art. Kevin was so happy with the final product that he stuck with FenFabrication for a whole bunch of other improvements. What, you think it will stop at the tone and exhaust? lizard people.
The mod list is more like a spare parts catalog for the Toyota Supra A80. An upgraded turbo, high-flow intake, improved wastegate, downpipes, intercoolers, injectors and more all contribute to this 3.0-liter V6 pumping 657 hp to all four wheels. Assuming a 20 percent driveline loss, this unconventional performance hero can put out about 820 hp (611 kW) at the crankshaft. And it’s done the hard way – through trial and error because no one makes high-performance parts for the Explorer.


There’s enough power to send this three-row SUV through the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds. After passing the trap, the upgraded eight-piston brakes rolled it back up. They are definitely needed, as this Explorer still has the weights of all three rows in it. And there might be more powers in the future, as Kevin said Ford muscle the upgraded turbo is good for 1,100 hp.
Will we see a nine-second Explorer in the future? Hard to say, but one thing is for sure. Kevin really likes the modified rabbit hole, so we’ll keep an eye on him Instagram page for more updates.
