The next generation Audi A4 is perhaps one of the best kept secrets in the automotive industry. We only saw two test prototypes on public roads (see related link below), but it’s enough for our friends in motor.es to create an accurate virtual preview of the new compact executive model. The result of their work is the rendering attached at the top of this article and below is everything we know about the new A4 so far.
There were early rumors that the new A4 could switch to the MQB platform, which would save the automaker about $1 billion in development costs. However, those plans were scrapped and the A4 would remain on the MLB, meaning it would have the engine mounted longitudinally. More importantly, the new generation will be the last in the series to feature a combustion engine.
While many manufacturers are abandoning diesel engines, the new A4 will have a petrol variant and diesel engines, almost certainly feature some sort of electrification. The new generation will be the last to have an exhaust pipe, although a full-electric version is also believed to be available for the new model. Audi’s head of technical development confirmed in a report from October last year that the A4 EV will be based on the PPE platform, if it gets the green light for production.
We have little reason to believe that the design of the new A4 will represent a major change from today’s cars. Instead – like this preview of the new rendering – we expect the A4’s exterior appearance to be more of a heavy facelift of the current generation than a new design language.

It’s hard to predict when the Audi A4 2023 will debut, although we know it will stay on sale well into the end of the decade. Our educated guess is that it debuts late 2022 with sales and production likely to start during the first half of the year, depending on the situation with chip shortages and a few other factors.
