This 1978 Ford Mustang II SEMA Restomod Costs More Than A New GT500

The car world in general likes to serve hatred for the 1974-1978 Ford Mustang II. At this point it’s trendier than anything, so we’re not going to repeat familiar claims or boring cliches. However, we will remind everyone that the second generation Mustang II is one of the best-selling generations of all. Taken in context, it was the car people wanted at the time. And that keeps the Mustang alive until more power returns.

So when we see a good Mustang II, it catches our eye. That’s especially true when the wild restomod wears the color Grabber Blue with a deliciously evil demeanor. That’s what we have here, currently offered for sale by Velocity Motorcars via duPont Registry. But consider yourself warned. This could be the most expensive Mustang II of all time.

Specifically, it’s a 1978 Ford Mustang II but if we’re honest, there’s not much left from 1978. It does have a VIN tag, but under the customized body is a tube frame with independent suspension and wider tracks. This creates ample room for 325 series tires at the rear, with 275 series rubber at the front. 18-inch wheels surround large disc brakes at all four corners, and the car is reported to have a nearly 50/50 weight distribution.

Of course, the Mustang II never really had a problem with handling. The compact Ford turned out to be very agile, but lacked power thanks to an emissions-choking V8. This particular example doesn’t suffer from that problem, as there’s a second-generation 5.0-liter Coyote V8 behind the iconic Mustang II face. It was further modified with a Borla Eight Stack throttle body kit as well as a custom exhaust (obviously), and the engine was connected to a Tremec six-speed manual transmission. The horsepower rating isn’t stated, but it’s safe to assume the output is well surpasses the 134 ponies available in a V8-powered 1978 Mustang.

The bodywork is custom too, and looking inside you’ll find seating for just two. The interior doesn’t make much sense, except that the center stage holds an Alpine double din stereo on the dashboard. The high center tunnel is still a hallmark of the Mustang II, as are the door panels. However, the dashes are more reminiscent of what you’d find in the 1994-2004 Mustang.
