Shelby GT500 Drag Racing Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing Is A V8 Symphony

When it comes to American muscle cars powered by supercharged V8 power plants, the two most popular nameplates will always be part of the conversation – the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and the new CT5-V Blackwing, the most powerful Cadillac ever.

Although slightly different in terms of shape – one a four-door sedan and the other a two-door coupe – the two cars are almost identical in terms of power and performance. So much so that Edmunds had to put both of them in the crossfire to see which one was faster.

Now, this is no ordinary straight line drag race. The website calls it a U-Drag, meaning both cars must complete the quarter mile, brake hard at the end, finish the hairpin, and return to the starting line to finish the race. It’s certainly not a great American drag race, but we found it interesting, as did the other viewers and commentators on the video.

To keep pace with the skills of the racers in comparison, they had to U-Drag twice, switching cars and lanes for the second lap. Good.

In terms of numbers, the Shelby GT500 overturns the CT5-V Blackwing in horsepower, 760 vs. 668, but the Cadillac is up a bit with torque coming from its 6.2-liter supercharged V8. The Mustang is also a bit heavier than the CT5-V, albeit slightly.

That said, you can expect the Cadillac to drop faster on the line and that’s exactly what happened in the race above.

With this unconventional U-Drag format, can Shelby catch up to the Cadillac towards the end of the race? The video at the top of this page will show you the results of both experiments.
