Volkswagen has announced it has passed a resolution giving it the go-ahead to build a new factory that will build its upcoming electric model, the Trinity. The upcoming flagship model was first announced in 2021, which will spearhead the next generation of zero-emissions VW cars.
The new plant will be built near VW’s main plant in Wolfsburg. It is a key component of the largest modernization program in the history of Volkswagen’s prime location. VW said the total investment was around €2 billion, or about $2.2 billion at current exchange rates.
“The decision of the Supervisory Board is an important milestone for the transformation of our brand and the future of the Wolfsburg production facility. In doing so, we strengthen and maintain the competitiveness of key factories and give the workforce a strong long-term perspective,” Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter said.
“We are setting a benchmark in the automotive industry with Trinity and the new plant and turning Wolfsburg into a global beacon for the production of cutting-edge and efficient vehicles. This reaffirms that the transformation of the German economy as an industrial center is achievable.”
Construction for the new Wolfburg plant for Trinity will begin in early spring 2023. Building and environmental laws will be considered, so the new site will meet high environmental standards.
VW added that the Trinity will be launched off the assembly line in 2026. The clean carbon neutral model is said to be built using the most innovative manufacturing methods, which will serve as the model for the gradual transformation of all other Volkswagen manufacturing sites around the world. The target production time per vehicle is 10 hours.
VW boasts that the Trinity will be ready for Level 4 autonomous driving when it launches, plus it will have a short charging time and a range of over 700 kilometers (435 miles).
