Tesla Model S Plaid Finally Loses Drag Race To … A Pickup Truck?


It’s okay to mention shenanigans at this race. In fact, we expect Tesla to be faithful to the mention of shenanigans. After all, this best of the three drag races sees the usual Model S Plaid racing against the decidedly out-of-stock Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Whenever you see two turbochargers stuck outside the engine bay PurposelyYou know this is a serious build.

That said, come on Tesla fans. The stock Plaid S Model still puts more than 1,000 horsepower (746 kilowatts) into the ground, and claws at the pavement with all four tires. On the road almost nothing can touch it for a quarter of a mile, and as we have seen with the latest this vs. That series on Hoonigan’s YouTube channel, even heavily modified cars struggle against Plaid. Wherever you stand in regards to Tesla or the electric versus internal combustion debate, there’s no denying Checkered’s insane performance threshold.

So how do you fight madness? It started with the 427 cubic inch Chevrolet LSX V8. That’s not the crazy part, neither is the Chevy Silverado pickup truck that this engine is in. Big and heavy don’t match speed, and we all know how difficult it is for trucks to gain traction with so little weight on the rear wheels. Finding a handle on a prepared drag strip is one thing, but on an unprepared anvil? The truck stands no chance, despite what the title says.

Here’s the crazy part. Chevy Silverado is four-wheel drive. No, not all-wheel drive in performance applications. This is horror 4×4 with a Silverado transfer box that sends power to the front wheels. The owner of this crazy pickup (known only as Beto in the video) did a burnout on the 2WD to heat up the rear, lock it into 4WD, and release the war dogs.

The first of three races says it all. The Plaid S model with AWD is fast, but the big Chebby locked to 4WD is faster. Both vehicles left the starting line at the same time but the Silverado widened the gap to five cars at the finish line. A miscommunication in the second race also saw Silverado win, so overall, this battle was won by the team truck. However, the bonus rounds had the Model S hurtling at 30 mph to begin with, and it ended up being very close race. Who wins? We’ll leave that to the video.
