Ferrari Test Mule Spied Looking Like It’s Seen Better Days

Disguised prototypes and test vehicles hide more than the automaker’s next new product. It can also hide the incompleteness and defects of the car. It also hides the wear and tear the test vehicle experienced during the development phase. The car went through thousands of brutal miles, over and over and over and over again in performance tests until it was time to ship in the hope of no unresolved future recalls.

But after a while, the test vehicle can look a little uglier for the gear, and one video captures it with a Ferrari. Video from Periodismo Del Motor showing what appears to be a test car we saw almost a year ago.

It has mostly the same camouflage cover, although some parts look ripped. The new test vehicle also had different colored brake calipers, but they also looked rugged. The white camouflage looks discolored and wrinkled, the edges are frayed. The sheet metal that was trying to hide underneath was also visibly dirty. Dirt makes it appear gray instead of black. Should be black, right?

Everything about the car looks a bit rough, but that’s exactly what you want in a test vehicle. You want to know the automaker puts the model through its paces before sending it to the assembly line. The camouflage-resisting tape looked like a scar, battered by bad weather.

Ferrari’s electrification efforts haven’t been fully detailed yet, but the company is moving in that direction. A patent filing showing a new model capable of accommodating all-electric and hybrid powertrains indicates the future of the brand.

Hybridization feels like a big stepping stone for automakers as it allows EV technology to mature. Electric vehicles have substantial performance benefits, but packing a powertrain into a Ferrari is a huge hurdle. Where do you put the battery? How do you manage your weight? Ferrari had to test all of that before we got a new product, which took a lot of work.
