The original Shelby Cobra is not a heavyweight. Its tube frame carries an aluminum body, and with the 427 cubic-inch engine mounted on the Mark III Cobras, it weighs about 2,400 pounds. When fiberglass-bodied Cobra kit cars started appearing, they dropped to around 2,200 pounds, depending on the engine.
Now, there’s a carbon fiber Cobra coming from Classic Recreation. The company had permission from Shelby to build the official Cobra numbered CSX follow-up car, and while we don’t know the total weight of the new car, we do know the bare carbon fiber body only weighs. 88 pounds. That’s the whole body, which as per the photo includes the hood and doors. And we have to admit – it looks absolutely stunning.

Officially, it’s called the Diamond Edition Shelby Cobra Carbon Fiber Race Car. The keyword in this sentence is race, although the official press release from Classic Recreations doesn’t exactly call it a track-only vehicle. In this regard, he also did not specifically label the Cobra as street legal. It is said that the Diamond Edition Cobra will rival modern hypercars while offering more comfort and a better driving experience compared to previous cars.
“Carroll Shelby taught me the importance of pushing the envelope through innovation and passion,” said Jason Engel, founder and vice president of design and engineering at Classic Recreations. “Carroll’s dream has always been to place the highest horsepower engine in the lightest, most agile car imaginable and it is an honor for us to meet that challenge.”
The carbon fiber Cobra will use a completely new chassis with modern engineering – no tube frames here. Under the hood sits a third-generation Ford Coyote V8, and with an optional supercharger, it produces over 800 horsepower (597 kilowatts) for the rear wheels to handle. The shift of duty falls to the Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission. When it comes time to slow down, Wilwood’s six-piston brakes at all four corners come into play. Looks like this Cobra is indeed a very serious machine.
Because of this, they are very expensive, and even if you can afford them, getting them will not be easy. Only 10 are planned for production, and each starts at $1.2 million.
