The new Mercedes SL-Class has a plug-in hybrid variant on its way. This spy shot offers a sample look that doesn’t appear to be wearing any camouflage.
In terms of style, the SL plug-in is identical to the existing version. The only minor difference is on the back, where the company has to add a panel to access the charging port.

The powertrain is reportedly using the SL63 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 but adds electric assist. This may push output as high as 800 horsepower (597 kilowatts), versus the 577 hp (430 kW) of the existing model.
Given that the only change to this model is in the powertrain, don’t expect a long wait before a full launch. His debut later in 2022 is very likely to happen.
Mercedes sells the new SLs exclusively under the AMG branding, meaning they all have Panamericana grilles with vertical slats. Pop-out door handles keep the sides looking smooth. For the first time in generations, the vehicle gets a fabric roof instead of a folding hardtop. At the rear, there is an active rear spoiler that spreads out from the smooth tail.
The cabin is reminiscent of other recent Mercedes models. There’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The 11.9-inch infotainment screen can be tilted between 12 and 32 degrees so drivers of different heights can adjust the position to their liking. Like other Mercedes convertibles, the front seats feature an Airscarf that blows warm air down the passenger’s neck.
For the first time, the SL is available with all-wheel drive. There’s also rear-wheel steering, and customers can get a limited-slip differential for the rear axle for more control.
Prices for the new SL for the United States are not yet available. Expect the numbers to be available closer to when the roadster goes on sale in the second quarter of 2022.
