Mercedes GLS Test Mule Spied With Placeholder Lights

In November last year, we saw a lightly camouflaged Mercedes-Maybach GLS prototype on public roads in Germany. This hints at very minor visual tweaks as the most luxurious GLS is already an impressive sight. The refresh to the luxury model will likely mean the regular GLS will also get an update and we may see an early start on the big SUV.

The video attached at the top of this page shows a rather odd GLS. It looks wrong on many levels, but it’s something to expect from a test vehicle. This short 1:30 minute clip covers shooting on a public road, meaning even a test car should have the necessary lights on the rear and front.

This easily explains the replacement lights you can see on both ends of the vehicle. At the front, the headlights appear much smaller than the area they have to occupy. At the top of each cluster, there is a blue styrofoam coating, which may prevent the headlights from moving. The edges of the bumper – a piece of unpainted black plastic – don’t seem to fit into the overall context of the front fascia.

The rear is even worse. There are only two round lights on each side, probably covering the legal minimum of brake lights, turn signal lights and reverse lights. There is trim missing from the trunk lid and the rear bumper has the same rough shape as the front bumper. Last but not least, it doesn’t look like a final production exhaust.

If you ask us what Mercedes is testing with this prototype, the obvious answer is a facelift for the GLS. If that’s the case, we could see a more serious refresh for this luxury SUV as some of these unmatched exterior details could be just a disguise for the final look. We’ll probably have to wait at least a few more months until we see another prototype test that, hopefully, reveals more.
