With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Eastern Europe has been thrust into a war not seen in the region since World War II. The situation was such that automakers began to offer assistance to support the Ukrainian population. However, Torsus is a manufacturer that really exists in the Ukraine.
Torsus specializes in some of the ugliest off-road buses and RVs available from the manufacturer. You may remember the Praetorian, be it a school bus unafraid of snow days or a land vehicle with extreme off-grid capabilities thanks to its MAN foundation. The company also offers a smaller off-road van called the Terrastorm, using the Volkswagen platform as a starting point for its more manageable 4×4 van.
Founded in 2016, Torsus is headquartered in Czechia (Prague, to be specific) but has offices and facilities in Ukraine. On February 27th, Torsus offered the world an update on its staff caught in the middle of this horrific war. Fortunately, the company said the family and employees were safe.
Of course, the same cannot be said for many people in this country. We Motor1.com coworkers in Italy reports that Mercedes-Benz supports the Ukrainian people both in spirit and with financial assistance. On February 25, the automaker shared a simple white image on Instagram with the caption “Most importantly: peace.” In addition, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius also said: LinkedIn announced a donation of €1 million to the Red Cross, specifically for aid to Ukraine.
Meanwhile in Wolfsburg, the Volkswagen Group also pledged a donation of €1 million. Via Twitter, the company announced it would make a donation to the United Nations Refugee Agency, aimed at helping the situation in Ukraine. VW CEO Herbert Diess shared the announcement via his LinkedIn account as well.
On the manufacturing side, Reuters reports that Volvo has suspended all vehicle exports to Russia. In addition, AB Volvo has suspended production and sales in Russia. It follows similar moves last week from Daimler and Renault, freezing business activity or halting production in the country.
