BMW is preparing an all-new X2 crossover. We saw the revamped model for the first time in October, publishing photos of the hotter M35i trim a few days later. The first beat for the redesigned X2 isn’t over yet, as the latest spy images capture the electric iX2.
This is our first look at the EV, which is very similar to the gas-powered versions we’ve already seen. However, the large “Electric Vehicle” sticker on the front door, the absence of the exhaust system tucked under the rear valence, and the closed grille reveal the car’s powertrain. The crossover sports a full-body camouflage wrap that hides styling details, but the coupe-like sloping roof is easy to spot. The X2 borrows some hints from the larger X4 at the rear while taking a more closed approach to rearranging the front fascia.

The iX2 is expected to share a powertrain with the iX1 which debuted earlier this year, both using the FAAR platform. This bite-sized crossover packs a dual motor setup, one for each axle, producing 313 horsepower (230 kilowatts) and 364 pound-feet (494 Newton-meters) of torque. It is the most powerful third-generation X1 variant available, reaching 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) from rest in 5.7 seconds.
Powertrain details for the rest of the lineup are a mystery, but we expect BMW to offer it with three- and four-cylinder engines. The M35i will likely pack a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing a little over 300 hp (223 kW). It may not exceed the output of the electric iX2, but it will receive a unique sporty style to set it apart from the rest of the lineup.
No interior spy shots yet, but we expect the iX2 to follow the trends set by other BMW models. The crossover should receive the company’s iDrive 8 system, which places two large screens on the dashboard.
The BMW X2 and iX2 still have a lot of development time ahead of them. We don’t expect the new iX2 to debut until sometime next year before it arrives as a 2024 model. It might be a while before the electric crossover makes its way to the US, if there ever is one. The iX1 which will provide the powertrain is not available alongside the gas-powered X1.
