Executive Admits Honda’s 2024 Prologue Might Ride Like Other GM EVs

The EV partnership between Honda and General Motors, announced in 2020, will begin to bear fruit in the next few years with the arrival of the Honda Prologue 2024. However, the electric crossover is based on GM’s Ultium platform and uses the American automaker’s proprietary battery technology, raising questions as to whether they will will drive like a car made by Honda.

The answer to that question, it seems, is “not really.” Honda CEO, President and Executive Director Toshihiro Mibe and Senior Managing Executive Officer Shinji Aoyama recently sat down with members of the media in a roundtable discussion, during which the Ultium platform was often the topic of conversation. Talking about the Prolog and GM’s own Ultium-based crossover, Aoyama admits that the behind-the-wheel experience will probably be similar.

“We are limited because of the basic architecture,” he said. “To distinguish [them] in terms of performance it will be difficult.”

Mibe agrees, pointing out that the Honda Prologue’s performance will probably mirror some of GM’s crossovers – possibly the Blazer EV – thanks to its shared platform and similar battery specs. However, both Aoyama and Mibe are confident that the Prolog will still feel like Honda in many ways that consumers care about most.

“Design – top hat – is where we will make our differentiation,” Mibe said.

Indeed, the Honda Design Studio in Los Angeles is styling the Prologue, with a unique exterior and cabin that takes inspiration from the adorable E hatchback, not America. Among Honda’s signatures will be a funky wordmark on the rear hatch written in a slightly retro corporate script. What’s more, the E hatchback will contribute its HMI infotainment software, helping the cabin feel modern and EV-only. Finally, the Japanese automaker will have a hand in the quality control of the Prolog, ensuring it meets Honda’s standards for durability and reliability.

The Prologue will arrive at Honda dealerships in 2024, positioned alongside the Passport as a versatile and adventure-oriented battery-electric. Pricing and final specifications have not yet been announced.
