To obtain a motorcycle license, that is the one that allows us to drive any type of scooter or motorbike, it is enough to be 18 years old, even if at that age many require above all the B for the car. However, it seems that the procedure for obtaining it has now been, so to speak, streamlined.
To obtain the A driving license in Italy it is no longer necessary to take a new practical exam. A novelty regarding motorcyclists who wish to switch to a higher power bike was introduced by the Infrastructure-Bis Decree, also passed to the Senate.
Driving license for motorcycles and Simplification Decree
With the new Infrastructure Decree-Bisthe Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility has officially adopted important reforms which “reduce administrative burdens for users and accelerate the issuance of driving licenses, professional qualifications and certificates of professional competence”.
Of particular importance for motorcycles is the possibility of obtaining the driving license A2 and A without having to take a practical exam, as was previously the case on a motorcycle. As many motorcyclists know, in the past they had to pass a practical test demonstrating their ability to maneuver and in the safety of:
– Motorcycles with rated power from 20 kW to 35 kW, power / weight ratio equal to or less than 0.2 kW / kg and displacement equal to or greater than 250 cm3 (for A2 license)
– Motorcycles with a rated power of at least 50 kW, a cylinder capacity of at least 600 cm3 and an unladen mass exceeding 180 kg (for A or A3 driving license)
Driving license, without practical exam for that A
At the age of 18 many people enroll in driving school and the type of license they obtain is often type B1, ie for passenger cars. This is because obviously you can immediately gain autonomy for travel and work.
On the other hand, few people immediately apply for an A license for motorcycles, even if there are any. It now appears that a new procedure has been introduced to speed up the process obtaining the license.
With the approval of the Infrastructure-Bis Decree, the practical test for motorcycle licenses of category A2 or lower than A is no longer required. The MIMS in fact states that: “A1 or A2 license holders will now be able to obtain an A2 or A driving license without having to take a new practical exam after having undergone specific training”.
Therefore, for those applying for a driving license for the first time, the procedure will remain the same and nothing will change. On the other hand, motorcyclists already in possession of a license have to follow only a seven hour course without having to demonstrate your driving skills.
The elimination of the final exam is not valid for everyone
As for the motorcycle license, the elimination of the aforementioned final exam, in which the candidate drives the motorcycle and is followed by the examiner in the car, is a novelty. But it should be noted that it is not valid for everyone and is limited to certain categories of people.
From about 2004 to today, it is known that to drive a two-wheeled vehicle, starting with scooters that can be used from 14 years upwards, it is necessary to obtain a “license”, which is absorbed by the licenses obtained subsequently, whose name is AM.
There are also two categories of larger displacement mopeds: A1which can normally be obtained from the age of 16, e A2which can be obtained from the age of 18.
In order to apply the protocol that allows license A candidates to attend a driving school course of approximately seven hours of theory and practice without taking the final exam, it is necessary to have achieved the intermediate category for both A1 and A3. Otherwise, they will have to follow the conventional protocol to obtain the A driving license.
