Pulsejet Go-Kart With Glowing Exhaust Looks Terrifying And Awesome

Throughout the aisles of automotive history, there have been many vehicles adorned with nicknames wild animals. Your esteemed writer once crossed paths with a white 1994 Buick Roadmaster on the tires of an off-road truck that, for over a year, was known as a beast. It never sounds like a beast – in fact, we’d bet that nothing four-wheeled and chair-sounding is as bad as this go-kart.

Say hello to Robert Maddox, or Rocketman according to his YouTube page. We recently discovered his channel and this crazy video, and if you’ve clicked play, his expression says it all. Frankly, we can’t imagine anyone no has a similar expression sitting close to white-hot steel on a jet-propelled board with wheels. The video doesn’t offer much information about its creation, but then again, there’s not much else to do. Take a tube frame, add four wheels, a seat, a steering wheel, a propane bottle, three pulsejets, and voila, one go-kart beast.

Even the engine is quite simple. A pulse jet is essentially a mixture of air and fuel in the combustion chamber, with the explosion being channeled backwards for thrust. In Maddox’s design there are no valves, and the explosive nature of the explosion is the origin of the name (and its strange sound). The downside to the pulsejet’s design is that it’s not very efficient, but when you have three of them bolted to a featherweight chassis, one doesn’t need much of a push to have fun.

And yes, it looks really fun. According to the video description, Maddox has been traveling at speeds of up to 90 mph when not holding the camera while driving with one hand. A simple throttle controls speed, and for what it’s worth, the rig looks pretty stable on a dry lake bottom. And we bet it’s nice and warm too… perfect for a fun walk on a cold desert night. Just don’t lean on the machine when you stop to rest.

Jump to Maddox website, we see this is not his first rodeo with a long shot. He makes great go-karts, motorbikes, pulsejets surfing board, and he offers complete machines as well as kits and plans for people to build their own animals. Maybe something could work on the Buick Roadmaster?

No, we don’t have to go down that road again. Or us?
