Previous Kia Sportage Recall Facing Another Recall Due To Another Fire Risk

In what looks like a series of recalls involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles, the Hyundai Motor Group’s headache with regards to these fixes isn’t over yet. In fact, a set of previously recalled 2008-2009 Kia Sportage units face recalls due to the same potential hazard: the risk of fire.

In the NHTSA recall number 22V-800, the nearly 72,000 Kia Sportage recalled in 2016 (16V815) needed to be sent back to the dealer for repair. The car owners were also instructed to park their cars outside and away from their homes – at least until repairs have been made by the automaker.

A chronological breakdown of the recall was provided by NHTSA. On August 18, 2022:

The Kia Safety Office North America (Kia NA) received a Vehicle Owner’s Questionnaire (VOQ) 11479730 involving a 2008MY Sportage alleging lighting of ABS warning lights and vehicle fire when parked. Previous vehicles had the HECU connector cover replaced under the 16V815.

Subsequent investigations found potential thermal damage in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) area. This involved 15 vehicles that had previously replaced the HECU connector cover under the 16V815 recall. Further investigation revealed the same problem among the eight vehicle fires and 15 local meltdown/damage incidents identified by Kia. No fatalities, injuries, or accidents were reported.

The exact cause of the incident and fire is still under investigation, but Kia has made a recall for the 2008-2009 Sportage which was previously recalled in 2016. To be exact 71,704 units were involved, produced from 9 August 2007, to 13 May 2009.

If you currently drive a 2008 or 2009 Kia Sportage, especially if you purchased a used unit, we recommend that you check with your Kia dealer whether your car’s VIN is part of the 16V815 recall. Better safe than sorry.
