The VW Vanagon Is A Cute And Comfortable Custom Top Camper Van

The Volkswagen Vanagon was a popular van in the 90s. Its compact dimensions make it a viable urban transport, even further. But the Vanagon’s size didn’t deter retailers from customizing it and turning it into a motorhome.

Case in point: The 1990 Ruby – VW Vanagon was converted into a high-top van that could take its owner anywhere. William Woodward, a professional photographer, has lived full time at Ruby for over six years, with the van being a tool in his taste for adventure and exploration.

Woodward stands 6’4″ but Ruby’s modifications have allowed the van to accommodate his tall body, including some of his needs to live full time on the road. Small House Tour The video above will take you on a quick tour of his life situation, including some examples of clever use of minute space.

After updating Ruby two years ago, Woodward was able to install top shelves and add baskets, wooden boxes and creative bags for more storage in the compact motorhome. The extra space also allows her to set up a self-contained kitchen with a sink, two-burner hob and fold-out lid.

Modifications are not limited to the interior. As mentioned, Ruby can take Woodward anywhere. And that’s because the tires have been upgraded, while a two-inch lift is available paired with a customized bumper.

While still not a fully off-roader, these things allow Woodward to explore the remote places and locations necessary for his work as a professional outdoor photographer. The exterior design is also equipped with a box that stores outdoor gear, an extra fuel tank, and a bag with a tow strap.

A quick browse through Woodward’s social media platforms shows the places he can reach through Ruby. Based on the Instagram post above, he even appears to be making his annual trip to Baja in his Vanagon.
