In the fall of 2021, we debut our first one Motor1.com The Star Awards program distributes hardware to the best cars, trucks and SUVs in eight different categories. After a year of reflection, numerous feedback from readers and colleagues, and steering time on hundreds of new vehicles, we have refined our test formula and reimagined it for 2022 with our main sponsor, E-Range EV Tires.
Throughout the year, Motor1.com and InsideEVs The editor evaluates almost all vehicles that are newly introduced in the market. But the work doesn’t stop when the journey ends. When the car is put in the garage, we take out the worksheet.
To get as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as possible, our rating system divides the vehicle universe into 144 micro-segments, which are scored on 60 or more individually weighted measurement points, looking at everything from design and safety to performance and comfort. The net result is our Star Rating, a score of 1-10 which helps you sort out cars to consider and cars to skip.
Star Awards take place where Star Ratings stop. Our consideration set starts with vehicles that are all new or significantly revised over the past year. From there, we invite the cars that achieve the highest ratings to join us for Test Week, deep in the California desert.
Throughout the year we let data take the lead in our scoring system, but the goal of Test Week is to compare vehicles head to head – on the highway, on the track, or on the ground as the case may be – to see which competitors in each segment stand out with scores that cannot. not to be missed, amazing technology, and impressive real-world behavior. (There will also be a spreadsheet here, but it’s not very interesting to talk about.)
For 2022 we have streamlined our categories but deepened the vehicle field in each category. We will reward the best in Electric, Performance, Luxury, Truck, SUV, and Value. And, of course, we’ll be wrestling with the coveted Editor’s Choice Award for the second year in a row.
Best of all, this year we want to take you with us. Each day we’ll be broadcasting live from Star Awards HQ, summarizing the day and teasing which vehicles might be close to winning. There might also be some hard earned cocktails, if the lawyers let us. Planning to join the fun through Youtube, Facebookand/or Twitterwhere we will answer your questions, right away.
