The long and tiring game of flirting for the all-new Renault Austral is almost over. The French automaker will unveil the model in full on March 8, but has one final preview image before the big debut. The design sketch attached above finally gives us an idea of an SUV without camouflage, albeit in graphic form.
Renault proudly describes the Austral as having a very modern look with a muscular silhouette and large wheel arches, hiding the big wheels. Several design characteristics describe this model as a typical SUV, including side impact protection, a high beltline, and an off-road-inspired diffuser on the front fascia.

Ignoring the marketing language for a minute, Austral is a lot like the Megane E-Tech Electric version to us. Of course, there are differences between the two and the new SUV’s signature lighting is one of its distinctive design features. Renault says the front fascia of this model combines “agility and sophistication,” and we could also add it to make it look a bit aggressive in this design sketch.
“We designed the all-new Austral exterior based on the new Renault brand ‘sensual tech’ language,” explains Agneta Dahlgren, Renault Design Project Director. “The result is a combination of the bulky shape, curved shoulders, prominent sides and subtle technical details such as high-tech lamps, which amplify its distinctive design.”
The Kadjar successor will share the platform with the new Nissan Qashqai for Europe, meaning the French SUV will not be available with a diesel engine. At launch, a revised 1.3-liter 12-volt mild hybrid engine will be sold alongside a completely new 1.2-liter Tce unit with 48V mild hybrid technology.
All the tech details will be announced on March 8th when the new Austral will make its official and full debut. Stay tuned.
